Sleep

I think sleep is something that most adults struggle with in their lives. There are some of those that are lucky enough to never have an issue falling asleep when they close their eyes, sleep for 8 hours, and then wake up feeling energized and refreshed. I think they are in the minority.

Everyone else may have problems falling asleep, staying asleep, or feeling refreshed. I had insomnia for a long enough time to know how valuable sleep is and how devastating it is to feel like your body is working against you. When all you want to do is look at your bed as a safe place, it can feel pretty hopeless if it’s been so long that it’s no longer the case.

I remember not really falling asleep one night and then my coworkers reassuring me that because I didn’t sleep that well the previous night that I would sleep perfectly that night. And then I didn’t sleep at all basically that night. That’s where my deep-rooted anxiety about sleep started. There was nothing I was able to do and I felt powerless. I continued not being to get more than a couple of hours of sleep a night. There were some nights that I fell asleep at 10PM only to wake up again at 12AM and not be able to fall asleep. It’s a pretty awful experience and I wish that nobody had to go through it. But I also know there are probably millions of people that experience insomnia. People who just cannot get enough sleep at night. People who can’t fall asleep, who can’t stay asleep for very long, or people who wake up in the middle of the night and then are just awake for the rest of the day.

I’ve spent a long time doing a lot of research. I did end up fixing my sleep issues for the most part. I still have the odd night here or there, anxiety-related usually, but for the most part, I no longer have the fear of not being able to fall asleep.

I hope to cover a few things that I’ve learned and if it can help other people then that would truly be worthwhile. I don’t think anybody should be deprived of sleep or feel like they can’t achieve it.
